HISTORY Guila Monacello was never overly good at doing as she was told. But, being the favored granddaughter of one of the older Caporegimes, and so she was allowed a measure of freedom. But when she announced that she was getting married and moving to Australia, the family told her to go and not to come back. No matter that she was marrying well known doctor Rowan Chase.
The first few years saw Guila happy, and she only drank a little from the stress inherent in uprooting to a new country and in being married to a doctor. She was even happier when little Robert came along, and for a while, no liquor passed her lips.
But it couldn't last. News of her family's doings got to her, and she drowned out her sorrows and stress with a bottle of bourbon. Or whiskey. Or whatever else was handy. Maybe she drank because her husband was never home, and maybe he was never home because she drank, but Robert was spared this traumatic experience. He wasn't spared others.
He was thirteen and attending an all-boys boarding school when he got the call from his drunk and hysterical mother telling him that his father was gone and wasn't coming back. The young boy took it rather more philosophically than she did and returned home at her bidding.
Robert spent the next four years going between home and school, caring for him mother who seemed to have decided that the world wasn't worth facing sober. It was a burden he bore in silence, and he allowed no part of his life to suffer for the other. His kept his grades at the top of his class, but he was never too far away to answer his mother's summons. He graduated at the age of seventeen as the salutatorian of his class, not quite making valedictorian as his mother chose the last week of school to take a turn for the worse, and then depart from the world. He missed the graduation ceremony entirely.
Entering a seminary right after his mother's death, he spent the next two years intent on becoming a priest. He was there up until the beginning of his last semester, when he "lost faith." He transfered, and did another year finishing his undergrad degree in a total of three years. Robert is excessively smart, and perhaps also excessively driven. Which is how he managed to get his medical degree three years, and do his residency in another three.

CURRENTLY Now, at the age of 27 Robert Chase has returned to Italy, and to the family of his mother. Because between them and his father, they were the lesser of two evils. And while the welcome wasn't exactly warm, neither did he get a door in his face. He considered that a step in the right direction.
Chase is, as it says above, driven. He's determined, and he rarely gives up on something he's set his mind to. He's fluent in Italian, but occasionally his Australian accent rears its head. He does what he has to, and while he caters to patching up any Monacello's who need it, he keeps his practice clean.
